The historic Council Chamber of the Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly celebrates its centenary, marking a hundred years since its inception. Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania referred to the chamber as a 'living witness to the history of democracy' in India, noting its critical role in shaping the nation's political and social landscape.
Recounting the chamber's history, Pathania highlighted that it was constructed between 1920 and 1925, coinciding with the implementation of the Government of India Act, 1919. This legislation established a 145-member government under British rule, setting the stage for pivotal democratic developments, including the passage of women's voting rights.
Pathania acknowledged the chamber's transformation post-Independence, where the national emblem replaced the Crown's symbol. He also emphasized the chamber's enduring legacy in nurturing meaningful legislative debates, urging politicians to maintain decorum. The centenary celebration will include events to honor the chamber's heritage and its impact on India's democracy.
