State-owned warship builder, Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE), will embark on a project to beautify two significant ghats along the Hooghly River. This initiative, announced in a Memorandum of Understanding with Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata, is aimed at reviving the historic riverfront.
The chosen sites are Suriname Ghat in Garden Reach and Mayer Ghat in Bagbazar. Suriname Ghat was the departure point for over 34,000 indentured laborers to Suriname between 1873 and 1916. These laborers significantly contributed to Surinamese society, despite enduring challenging conditions.
Mayer Ghat holds religious significance as it is associated with Ma Sarada, the consort of spiritual leader Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa, linking it to Kolkata's vibrant spiritual and cultural heritage. Together, these projects emphasize Kolkata's rich history and draw attention to its cultural landmarks.
