Himachal Pradesh is facing severe disruption as relentless monsoon rains continue to lash the state, leading to crucial roads, including national highways, becoming impassable. The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) reported that, in just 24 hours, 650 roads, including three significant highways, were blocked, affecting essential transport routes. Additionally, 1,205 distribution transformers (DTRs) and 160 drinking water supply schemes have been incapacitated, highlighting the scope of the crisis.
The impact of the monsoon has been catastrophic, with the death toll climbing to 409 since June 20. Among these, 229 deaths are directly related to rain incidents such as landslides, flash floods, and structural collapses, while 180 fatalities have been attributed to road accidents during the same timeframe. Mandi district is notably affected, with extensive damage to infrastructure, including 313 blocked roads and 783 power transformers out of action. Similarly, Kullu and Shimla districts are experiencing significant transportation and utility disruptions.
Efforts to restore normalcy are in progress, with the Public Works Department, electricity boards, and the Jal Shakti department working tirelessly to clear debris and repair damages. However, persistent rainfall presents a significant barrier to these restoration efforts. An SDMA spokesperson emphasized the constant threat posed by landslides and reiterated the advisory for residents to minimize travel in high-risk areas due to the instability of saturated slopes.
