Shimla is grappling with the aftermath of torrential rains that lashed the city, resulting in extensive damage over the past 24 hours. The heavy downpour triggered landslides and felled trees, particularly impacting the Shilma Highland area, local sources report.
Damage reports indicate that two residential buildings were declared unsafe due to structural cracks, while one residence suffered partial damage. Authorities confirm six to seven vehicles were severely affected. Fortunately, no casualties were reported, though local officials are currently assessing the overall damage.
Residents recounted harrowing experiences, with eyewitness Madhubala describing the night's ordeal. "Around 2 am, loud crashing noises made it feel like something was falling," she said. R.S. Gupta, another local, narrowly avoided injury when a fallen tree pierced his home. Despite significant property damage, swift action by police and rescue teams ensured the safety of trapped residents.
Saurabh Gupta provided a firsthand account of the unprecedented force of the landslides, explaining how trees and debris were hurled into homes, destroying vehicles and damaging structures. Responding to the crisis, local MLA Harish Janartha criticized the inadequate drainage system near Portmore Government School, attributing it as a contributing factor to the disaster. He assured that relief efforts, including compensation and shelter, were underway.
The ongoing risk from unstable trees has prompted officials to caution residents to remain vigilant. The administration's rapid response, including traffic restoration, has been commended, as officials continue to expedite damage assessments to provide immediate relief to affected families.
