In a mounting call for justice, activists gathered on Thursday outside the Jodhpur collectorate office, urging the release of detained climate activist Sonam Wangchuk. Wangchuk faces charges under the National Security Act, linked to violent protests in Leh over unmet political promises.
RK Meghwal, supporting Wangchuk, claimed the unrest escalated after police actions against protesters. Meghwal highlighted Wangchuk's contributions to climate technology and advocacy, noting his longstanding opposition to violence and quick suspension of protest activity when tensions rose.
Meghwal criticized the ruling government for retracting its commitment to grant Ladakh Sixth Schedule status post-Article 370 abrogation, accusing authorities of prioritizing corporate interests over regional rights. The protests, rooted in these grievances, left four dead amid altercations. Meanwhile, local conditions eased with the lifting of curfew restrictions, granting temporary relief to area residents.
