The Madurai Bench of the High Court is scheduled to hear the case concerning the devastating Karur stampede, which tragically claimed at least 41 lives and left over 100 injured. Additionally, anticipatory bail petitions by TVK General Secretary Anand and Nirmal Kumar will be up for consideration.
The incident occurred during a public rally led by TVK's actor and chief Vijay in Karur, Tamil Nadu, on September 27. A massive crowd became unruly, inciting panic and causing a deadly stampede. Numerous attendees were hospitalized after fainting due to the overcrowded conditions. Consequently, Vijay has postponed all political rallies for the next two weeks as a sign of respect and mourning, halting his electoral campaign. The party has committed Rs 20 lakh to assist the families of the deceased.
The Congress party has also provided Rs 1.25 crore cumulatively for those affected, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh for the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for those injured. TVK took to social media to express their condolences and announce the temporary suspension of their rallies. DMK MLA V Senthilbalaji, speaking in Karur, urged against politicizing the tragedy, emphasizing the need for future prevention.
