Concerns over potential flooding have intensified in South Bengal as the water flow from Maithon and Panchet reservoirs escalated to 70,000 cusecs on Friday. This spike, exceeding previous levels, has officials on high alert as the region battles with persistent rainfall.

Earlier, a release of 59,075 cusecs was recorded from the Durgapur Barrage, compounded by auxiliary flows through irrigation canals. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rainfall in Jharkhand and parts of Bengal, escalating fears of heightened water levels in the Damodar River.

Officials are closely monitoring the scenario, especially impacting districts like Purba and Paschim Medinipur, Purba and Paschim Bardhaman, Hooghly, Howrah, and Bankura, where heavy downpours could exacerbate the flood risk.
