Navigating the Skies: EU's Response to Potential Jet Fuel Crisis

The European Commission, led by Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas, is taking proactive steps to prepare the aviation sector for potential jet fuel shortages, triggered by the ongoing conflict in Iran. While no shortages are evident yet, the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz presents a significant threat, with Tzitzikostas warning of catastrophic consequences.

Addressing the media, Tzitzikostas outlined the Commission's measures, stressing the urgent need for the European Union to enhance production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and explore synthetic fuel solutions to reduce dependency on Middle Eastern imports. This move is part of a broader strategy to ensure energy security across the bloc.

The European Commission is also assessing alternatives such as U.S. jet fuel grade Jet A to secure supply. A comprehensive set of energy and transport measures is slated for presentation on Wednesday, setting the tone for a resilient and adaptive aviation industry.
