India's Wheat Production Takes a Hit: Anticipated Impact and Future Plans

Unseasonal weather has struck a blow to India's wheat production for the 2025-26 crop year, with forecasts adjusting to a range of 110 to 120 million tonnes. Key states suffered crop damage, prompting the government to recalibrate its procurement targets to stabilize the situation.

The Roller Flour Millers' Federation of India has projected an output of 110.65 million tonnes, slightly above the previous year. However, the agriculture ministry's earlier estimate was as high as 120.21 million tonnes, before adverse weather impacted the crops.

The government remains proactive in addressing the issues, raising procurement goals in several states and planning to unveil a new open market sale strategy soon. Exports have been sluggish due to price parity challenges, but efforts continue to support local millers in accessing supplies.
