Vietnam's Urgent Plea to U.S.: Allow Oil Tanker Passage Amid Middle East Blockade

Amid heightened tensions in the Middle East, Vietnam's state oil company has urged the U.S. Navy to permit the passage of a crude oil tanker it describes as essential for Vietnam's energy needs. The tanker, loaded with Iraqi oil, is currently held up by a military blockade in the region.

According to a statement by the U.S. Central Command, the supertanker Agio Fanourios I, with a Maltese flag, was redirected after leaving the Strait of Hormuz by U.S. forces as part of a continued enforcement effort against Iranian contraband. The vessel remains in limbo, pending further decisions by the U.S. authorities.

For Vietnam's Nghi Son Refinery, receiving this oil is critical. As noted by Hoang Dinh Tung, Vice President of Petrovietnam Oil Corporation, any delay could impact millions of Vietnamese consumers, businesses, and industries. The cargo, which left Iraq in April, is confirmed as legitimate, sold through Iraq's state oil company.
