Billionaire Gautam Adani is close to resolving various US legal investigations, with the SEC and Justice Department settling cases related to solar energy project disclosures in India. Adani and his nephew agreed to pay fines without admitting wrongdoing. Legal experts questioned the US jurisdiction in the case.
Billionaire Gautam Adani is on the verge of resolving a series of US legal investigations, sources familiar with the situation reported. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has concluded its civil case against Adani and his nephew, Sagar Adani, concerning disclosures tied to solar energy ventures in India.
According to court records, Gautam Adani has consented to pay a USD 6 million fine, while Sagar Adani will pay USD 12 million, without confirming or denying any misconduct. The US Department of Justice is also expected to drop criminal charges against the Adanis, following extensive interactions between prosecutors and their legal team.
Legal experts have scrutinized the efforts of US prosecutors, questioning if they overreached by applying securities laws to conduct based principally in India. The potential settlement of these cases would remove significant legal challenges for the Adani Group, which continues its expansion in infrastructure and energy sectors.
