Azam Khan Sentenced: A Landmark Verdict in Political Accountability

In a significant ruling, a court in Rampur has sentenced Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan to two years of simple imprisonment and a fine of Rs 5,000. The verdict is linked to derogatory remarks made by Khan against district officials during the 2019 Lok Sabha campaign.

Advocate Swadesh Sharma detailed the case, citing robust documentary and oral evidence, including eyewitness testimony and video footage, as the basis for the conviction. The inflammatory remarks came despite the Model Code of Conduct being in effect, resulting in legal action after repeated warnings and a written apology by Khan went unheeded.

The case, originally filed at Civil Lines Police Station and later transferred to Bhot Police Station, included eight government official witnesses. Evidence included unchallenged video footage of Khan's remarks, further solidifying the case against him.
