Paneer and desi ghee have been identified as the most adulterated food products in Punjab, according to a report released by Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh. The minister highlighted findings from recent samples, urging the public to rely on trusted sources or prepare these staples at home.
The report found that out of 531 paneer samples, 196 were sub-standard and 59 were unsafe, often containing starch or chemicals. Desi ghee samples also showed alarming results, with 20 out of 222 being sub-standard and 28 unsafe for consumption. Singh emphasized that creating adulterated food is a crime, with legal action already taken against many offenders.
Public awareness programs are being conducted to educate consumers about ensuring food safety. Singh urged residents to consider buying from Verka, the Milkfed cooperative brand, and disclosed that 145 individuals have been convicted and sentenced in the past five years for producing unsafe products.
