New research suggests that the age of autism diagnosis can significantly influence the subsequent development of mental health disorders. A diagnosis in late childhood is linked to a higher probability of developing conditions such as depression, according to the study.

Autism affects brain regions, including the cerebellum and amygdala, which result in challenges with social and emotional skills. Symptoms can appear as early as the first year or up to age two. Research from the University of Cambridge highlights genetic and developmental differences in early versus late autism diagnoses.

The study, published in Nature, examined two distinct groups with varying behavioral and genetic profiles. The findings demonstrate that early-diagnosed individuals had stable symptoms, while those diagnosed later saw increased difficulties in teenage years. This group also had a higher prevalence of ADHD and other mental conditions.
