Karnataka Government Tightens Vigil on Cough Syrup Sales

The Karnataka government has taken decisive action, instructing enforcement officers to maintain a vigilant watch on specific cough syrups. This directive comes in the wake of reports from Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, where consumption of these medications was linked to child fatalities.

According to a circular dated October 5, issued by the Food Safety and Drugs Administration (FSDA), incidents in Madhya Pradesh involving Coldrif Syrup from a Tamil Nadu pharmaceutical were a catalyst. The Tamil Nadu Drugs Control Department has since banned its sale and use within the state.

In Rajasthan, a similar tragedy was reported involving Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide Syrup produced by Kaysons Pharma. Karnataka's directive emphasizes the importance of enforcement officers testing samples of these medicines, ensuring compliance with the Drugs and Cosmetics Act of 1940. Meanwhile, the Union Health Ministry has underscored the necessity of adherence to Revised Schedule M by all drug manufacturers, warning of strict repercussions for any violations.
