The UK Parliament has taken a landmark step in public health by passing a bill that bans cigarette sales to future generations. Known as the Tobacco and Vapes Bill, the legislation will prevent those born after December 31, 2008, from buying cigarettes.
While it still awaits Royal Assent from King Charles, the bill will lead to one of the world's most stringent anti-smoking measures. The legislation also allows the government to regulate tobacco and nicotine products, including packaging and flavors. Health leaders are hailing it as a historic move.
The initiative, similar to repealed New Zealand laws, is part of broader efforts to tackle smoking-related health issues in the UK. It includes smoke-free zones in cars with children, playgrounds, and hospital grounds, though private spaces remain unaffected.
