The World Health Organization (WHO) announced on Monday the confirmation of seven cases of the Andes hantavirus among passengers of the cruise ship MV Hondius. The outbreak, initially involving nine reported cases, has now claimed three lives.

A WHO spokesperson stated that the update followed a report from France confirming that a French passenger evacuated from the ship had tested positive for the virus. This brings the total tally of confirmed cases to nine.

Two cases are suspected rather than confirmed, including what is believed to be the first infection of the outbreak. Tragically, the individual passed away before any testing could be conducted, highlighting the severity of the situation.
