In a shocking breach of trust, a driver who had worked with a family for nearly 15 years was arrested for exploiting an elderly Alzheimer's patient by siphoning off Rs 2.57 lakh through unauthorized UPI transactions, police reported on Monday.
The accused, named Devinder, allegedly capitalized on the victim's severe memory impairment to clandestinely access his mobile phone and transfer money into accounts tied to his associates. The transactions were executed between April 4 and April 15, raising suspicions after the victim's son reported them to the NCRP helpline, suspecting cyber fraud.
Upon investigation, authorities discovered the perpetrator was a known employee rather than an outsider. Devinder, who had gained familial trust over years of service, admitted to the crime after being apprehended in GTB Nagar following meticulous police work. Further investigation is ongoing.
