Revolutionizing Health and Agriculture: India's Mission SEHAT Launch
India launches Mission SEHAT to integrate agriculture with human health through research led by ICAR and ICMR. The mission aims to transform agriculture into a driver of health by promoting biofortified crops, diverse diets, and reducing occupational risks. It addresses malnutrition and non-communicable diseases.
On Monday, Health Minister J P Nadda and Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan launched India's ambitious Mission SEHAT, aimed at integrating agriculture with human health. Led by ICAR and ICMR, this initiative seeks to transform agriculture into a central player in national healthcare through enhanced research collaboration.
The mission promises to promote biofortified crops, nutrient-dense fish, and healthy livestock. It also emphasizes the importance of diverse and balanced diets across different age groups and aims to reduce occupational hazards for those in the agricultural sector. Chouhan highlighted the mission's focus on ensuring nutritious food and boosting public health.
ICAR's development of 203 biofortified crop varieties has previously lacked clinical trial validation. With ICMR's involvement, this collaboration hopes to address this gap and turn agricultural progress into significant health outcomes. The mission tackles issues like malnutrition, obesity, and the rise of non-communicable diseases, reflecting an urgent need for integration between agriculture and health.
