A confirmed Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo's Ituri province has resulted in 65 deaths among 246 suspected cases, according to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The agency is convening an urgent meeting with Congo, Uganda, South Sudan, and global partners to boost cross-border surveillance and response.
The primary affected areas include Mongwalu and Rwampara health zones, with additional suspected cases in Bunia. Initial reports suggest the presence of a non-Zaire strain of Ebola, complicating response efforts as current treatments target the Zaire variant, noted Jean-Jacques Muyembe, a leading Congolese virologist.
Intense population movement related to mining and urban settings is increasing the risk of further spread, raises the CDC. Security issues, including militia clashes, are exacerbating the situation by straining healthcare facilities. The WHO has released emergency funds to support response measures, while the violence has hindered humanitarian efforts in Ituri.
