In a concerted effort to address ongoing human rights abuses, five major Uyghur organizations announced their support for the bipartisan Uyghur Genocide Accountability and Sanctions Act (UGASA) at a Washington, D.C. press conference. The legislation, introduced by key members of the Congressional Executive Commission on China, aims to enhance U.S. response to atrocities committed against the Uyghur population by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
Supported by Congressman John Moolenaar, the UGASA intends to penalize individuals and entities involved in forced labor, surveillance, and organ harvesting. It also seeks to prevent the U.S. government from purchasing goods tied to Uyghur forced labor, mandate public reporting on abuses, and advocate for accountability regarding missing or detained Uyghur Americans.
The bill's introduction was backed by prominent figures from the Congressional Uyghur Caucus. Rushan Abbas from the Campaign for Uyghurs emphasized the legislation's importance for reuniting impacted families and holding the CCP accountable. The passage of UGASA is urged to combat the continued genocide and support Uyghur survivors, reflecting a strong, unified stance against such violations.
