Sudan's Strategic Port Under Siege: Tensions Escalate with Drone Strikes
Sudan's army reported intercepting drones targeting Port Sudan, the country's largest naval base. The city has faced assaults after hosting the army-aligned government amid a civil war with the paramilitary RSF. Drone strikes have opened a new conflict front in the region.

Sudan's army announced that its anti-aircraft systems successfully intercepted drones aimed at the nation's largest naval base in Port Sudan, the wartime capital. This incident follows a series of explosions, though it remains uncertain if they occurred near the Flamingo base.
For days, Port Sudan has been enduring assaults, reportedly including drone strikes by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which have damaged key fuel depots and impeded its role as a primary conduit for humanitarian aid. Previously unscathed, Port Sudan had been a bastion of relative tranquility since the onset of the civil war between the army and RSF in April 2023.
Strategically located on the Red Sea coast, Port Sudan became the operational base for the government aligned with the army after the RSF swiftly took over much of Khartoum at the conflict's inception. The recent drone attacks mark a significant escalation, opening a new front by targeting the army's principal stronghold in eastern Sudan subsequent to the RSF's retreat westward.
