The Supreme Court of India highlighted a growing crisis in high court vacancies leading to massive backlogs of criminal cases, with over 7 lakh appeals pending. This bottleneck is attributed to significant delays in the appointment of judges.
A bench comprising Justices Abhay S Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan emphasized the urgency of the situation at the Allahabad High Court, where 160 judges are sanctioned but only 79 are active, amid a staggering 2.7 lakh pending criminal appeals.
The apex court urges the Centre to expedite the clearance of judicial appointments and adopt measures such as digitization to mitigate the issue. Recommendations from 2023 and 2024 remain pending with the government, further contributing to the judicial delay.
