The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has granted a two-week extension to Uttar Pradesh authorities to submit a comprehensive report on pollution levels in the Ganga River. The directive comes after an inadequate report submitted previously.

On May 2, NGT Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava, accompanied by judicial member Justice Sudhir Agarwal and expert member A Senthil Vel, pointed out glaring omissions in the report by the state's environment secretary, dated April 30.

The report failed to provide vital information, including details of untreated sewage discharge from drains into the river. The NGT has sought clarity on whether these drains are tapped, the effluent quantity being diverted to sewage treatment plants, or any plans to do so. The tribunal also asked for timelines and accountability details for officials overseeing these operations.
