States Urged to Launch Nationwide Forest Rights Act Awareness Campaign

The Centre has directed all states and Union Territories to initiate a comprehensive month-long awareness campaign aimed at bolstering the implementation of the Forest Rights Act (FRA). This move is designed to ensure greater participation among tribal communities and other traditional forest dwellers.

The Union Tribal Affairs Ministry's directive emphasizes the importance of collaboration with NGOs and community-based organizations experienced in FRA implementation. The campaign will focus on informing stakeholders about their forest rights and simplifying the claims process. Key activities include distributing land titles, providing agricultural assistance, and integrating initiatives such as PM-KISAN.

Despite recognizing the rights over lands tribes have historically protected, the FRA's application has seen numerous violations. With over 51 lakh claims submitted, a significant number faced rejection, leading to controversy and demands for improved adherence to the law. Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh have notably high rejection rates.
