In a landmark verdict, a Mahila Court in Pollachi has handed 'life imprisonment till death' sentences to nine men involved in a notorious sexual assault case. The ruling comes six years after the initial shock and outrage that rocked the region.
The case has stirred political tension, with DMK and AIADMK pointing fingers at each other over women's safety during their respective regimes. Upon pronouncing the verdict, Judge R Nandhini Devi awarded Rs 85 lakh in total compensation to the eight women affected by these heinous acts.
The crimes, involving criminal conspiracy and gang rape, were committed between 2016 and 2018. Thirunavukkarasu received the longest imprisonment term, while electronic evidence played a critical role in securing convictions. Politicians, including Chief Minister M K Stalin, welcomed the decision, describing it as long-overdue justice for the victims.
