The Maharashtra government has revamped its high-powered committee to tackle the enduring border conflict with Karnataka. The decision reflects a need for non-partisan consensus on this complex dispute.
The reconstituted committee, led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, comes into play amid political transitions following last year's assembly elections. The bipartisan body includes notable figures such as Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, alongside various former chief ministers and party legislators.
The dispute over Marathi-speaking areas like Belagavi dates back to 1957, following India's linguistic reorganisation. Karnataka, however, upholds the current boundaries as per the 1967 Mahajan Commission Report, contesting Maharashtra's claims.
