A hawker in Thane, Maharashtra, has been sentenced to seven years in prison after a court found him guilty of attempted murder. The conviction stems from a 2021 incident where the hawker attacked a woman civic official with a sharp object during an anti-encroachment operation.
Additional Sessions Judge AS Bhagwat pronounced the verdict, affirming that the prosecution had successfully proven all charges against the convict, Amarjitsingh Shivshankar Yadav, beyond reasonable doubt. The brutal assault resulted in the severing of three fingers of Assistant Municipal Commissioner Kalpita Pimple, who was leading the drive.
Special Public Prosecutor Shishir Hirey highlighted in court that the attack could have been fatal if the victim had not defended herself. The prosecution may seek a harsher penalty, arguing the current sentence does not match the crime's severity.
