In a tragic incident, the Rubaya coltan mine in North Kivu, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, has experienced a deadly collapse, claiming the lives of at least 12 individuals, according to sources from the mining sector and civilian society.
The collapse occurred on Thursday, with dozens managing to escape the artisanal mine, although the exact reasons for the disaster are yet to be determined.
Last year, the mine came under the control of Rwanda-backed M23 rebels, adding to the complexities surrounding the operation and safety regulations in the area.
