In response to a recent gun attack that left a farmer injured in Bishnupur district, the Meitei organization, Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), has called for the establishment of a 'farmer safety zone' in Imphal Valley's peripheral areas.
COCOMI demands immediate shoot-at-sight orders against any unauthorized armed intruders, especially those bearing assault rifles or deadly firearms, following a breach of security involving the shooting of Ningthoujam Biren Singh from point-blank range near security lines.
The call comes amid ongoing ethnic tensions between the valley-dwelling Meiteis and the hill-dominating Kukis, who have been in conflict since May 2023, resulting in over 260 casualties. COCOMI urges increased security and protection for local farmers to ensure their uninterrupted cultivation.
