A right-wing lawmaker stepped into the role of Greece's migration minister on Monday, following the resignation of his predecessor amid allegations of EU farm subsidy fraud. The accused, including former migration minister Makis Voridis and other government officials, resigned after claims of misallocating European Union agriculture funds.
The allegations suggest that the funds, managed by the Greek body OPEKEPE, were misappropriated to people making false claims about owning or leasing livestock or pastures. Thanos Plevris has taken up the mantle as the new minister, expected to uphold a strict migration policy line.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis acknowledged the government's failure to eliminate corruption, in light of the scandal. He committed to retrieving misstated EU funds and emphasized that honest farmers and citizens would not tolerate such deceit.
