The Supreme Court intervened on Monday to grant interim protection from arrest to MLA M Jagan Moorthy, who faces allegations in a suspected kidnapping case involving a young boy. Moorthy, also known as 'Poovai Jagan Moorthy', serves as the president of the Puratchi Bharatham party, allied with the AIADMK. He represents the K V Kuppam assembly constituency.

A bench comprising Justices Manoj Misra and N Kotiswar Singh has issued a notice to Tamil Nadu Police following an appeal filed by Moorthy. Should the legislator be arrested concerning the FIR recorded at Thiruvalangadu Police Station, the court has ordered his release on a personal bond of Rs 25,000, provided he cooperates in the investigation and refrains from threatening witnesses or tampering with evidence.

The appeal disputes the Madras High Court's decision to dismiss Moorthy's plea for anticipatory bail on June 27. Moorthy argues the charges are a politically motivated effort to damage his reputation, with limited direct or corroborative evidence against him. The alleged crime connects to social tensions stemming from an inter-caste marriage, with accusations involving a broader conspiracy with senior law enforcement officials.
