Indian Catholic Bishops Decry Rising Hostility Towards Minorities

The Catholic Bishops Conference of India (CBCI) has voiced its alarm over what it describes as a growing atmosphere of hostility and violence directed at minority communities in the country. The group specifically highlighted the case of two nuns arrested in Chhattisgarh, accused of human trafficking and forced conversion.

Speaking at a press conference, Archbishop Anil Joseph Thomas Couto emphasized the seriousness of the issue, criticizing the erosion of constitutional values and the communalisation of state institutions. He noted increasing attacks on minorities and criticized the justice system's perceived failure in promptly addressing grievances against communal acts.

The CBCI is actively engaging with both state and central governments to address these concerns. Despite the serious allegations, the CBCI assures that they maintain a non-political stance and are driven by a commitment to human rights and constitutional values, even if that means opposing a ruling government.
