The Allahabad High Court has reserved its judgment on a petition by Abbas Ansari, contesting a decision by an MP-MLA court at Mau. The court had denied a stay on Ansari's conviction in a hate speech case related to the 2022 elections.
Abbas Ansari, the son of former gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari, was disqualified as a member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly after his conviction. He was sentenced to two years in prison for threatening administrative officials during his campaign.
The case against Ansari continues to unfold as his appeal is pending. The Allahabad High Court's decision will determine whether his disqualification stands. The political repercussions for the SBSP, an ally of the BJP, could be significant.
