Former Malian Prime Minister Moussa Mara has been detained and charged by a court over a social media post criticizing the shrinking democratic space under military rule, his lawyer announced on Friday. Mara has been vocally opposing recent political decisions that include dissolving political parties and granting the military an extended mandate without elections.
Mara faced several summons this month due to a post expressing solidarity with jailed government critics. Recently prevented from boarding a flight to Senegal for a regional peace and security conference, Mara was charged with undermining state credibility and spreading false information, with a trial set for September 29.
His arrest comes amidst escalating instability in Mali, where al-Qaeda-linked group Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin has intensified attacks. The group recently ambushed Malian soldiers and Russian mercenaries, highlighting the pressing security threats compounding the nation's political turmoil.
