West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has once again criticized the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) for drastically increasing its water discharge, which she claims has caused significant flooding downstream. According to Banerjee, the DVC's water release from its reservoirs this year has reached levels 30 times higher than during the 2023 monsoon season.
The Chief Minister described this year's 'flood mismanagement' as surpassing 'its own dismal accounts of previous years.' She claims that this substantial increase in water release is part of a larger agenda against the state, which she equates with identity politics.
Banerjee has demanded intervention from Prime Minister Modi, advocating for river and canal dredging within the DVC's catchment area. She believes this could potentially mitigate future flooding by allowing the waterways to hold an additional four lakh cubic meters of water.
