The Forest Department in Meerut has apprehended seven individuals in connection with illegal tree felling activities in Gujra village, part of the Hastinapur range. These arrests were announced by officials on Wednesday, alongside a Rs 2.70 lakh fine imposed on the culprits.

Divisional Forest Director Vandana reported that on August 5, the department received alerts about unauthorized tree cutting along a government drain. An investigative team unearthed the remnants of 14 trees, including stumps hidden under soil and foliage. The individuals arrested have been identified as Jaane Alam, Sher Mohammad, Bablu, Faraqat, Iqrar, Waris, and Vikas, also known as Chhotu.

Six of the accused hail from Saundat village and work as timber contractors, while Vikas alias Chhotu resides in Gujra village where the trees were felled. Legal actions are being pursued under the Uttar Pradesh Tree Protection Act, 1976, and associated regulations.
