On Monday, the Election Commission (EC) revealed that 65 lakh names have been removed from Bihar's draft electoral rolls. This action follows a Supreme Court directive requiring the publication of these names by August 19, with a compliance report due by August 22.
The EC, complying with the apex court's orders, has focused on Absentee, Shifted, and Dead voters across polling booths. These categories are to be listed online, ensuring transparency and accuracy in the electoral process.
The revision exercise indicated a significant reduction in the number of registered voters in Bihar, impacting numerous districts and highlighting the dynamic nature of the electoral rolls as assembly elections approach. The EC identified over 22 lakh deceased voters and more than 36 lakh individuals who have shifted or have erroneous multiple registrations.
