Deshabandu Tennakoon, who previously held the position of chief of police, has been apprehended by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on allegations linked to the suppression of the 2022 Aragalaya protests. His arrest marks another chapter in the controversial events surrounding his professional conduct.

Efforts by Tennakoon to avoid arrest through legal avenues were thwarted as the court dismissed his anticipatory bail application earlier this week. His dismissal from the role of inspector general followed a parliamentary inquiry investigating serious misconduct allegations.

Tennakoon's connections to the violent incidents during the May 9, 2022, protests, where government supporters clashed with demonstrators, have been a focal point. Despite having been sanctioned by the highest court for torture, Tennakoon served as police chief until the Supreme Court's suspension in mid-2024 led to his ultimate sacking.
