The Allahabad High Court has expressed strong disapproval over the investigative conduct of Uttar Pradesh authorities regarding an alleged land scam involving the former office bearers of a housing cooperative society. The court berated the Economic Offence Wing for their lackadaisical approach and hinted at transferring the investigation to a central agency.
The case centers on the Bahujan Nirbal Varg Sahakari Griha Nirman Samiti, a society intended to serve SC/ST members, which allegedly misallocated land. Allegations suggest that many beneficiaries were not entitled under the SC/ST category guidelines. Justice Pankaj Bhatia pointed to procedural improprieties as the society's new leadership seeks to take charge.
Amid the judicial proceedings, the Economic Offence Wing was tasked to probe the over-Rs one crore fraud allegations. However, the High Court remained unsatisfied with their progress, citing a failure to effectively handle the case, possibly necessitating central oversight. The accusations include embezzlement, triggering the possibility of actions under the anti-money laundering Act.
