In a significant confrontation, two women Naxalites were killed in Maharashtra's Gadchiroli district on Wednesday during an encounter with police forces, authorities confirmed.

The incident unfolded after police received reliable intelligence regarding the presence of members from the Gatta Local Organisation Squad (LOS) of Maoists near Modaske village in Etapalli taluka.

Immediately, a coordinated operation was spearheaded from Aheri, involving the police and five units of the C-60, an elite anti-Naxal commando team of the Gadchiroli police, with assistance from the CRPF in establishing the perimeter. In the ensuing exchange of fire, police retaliated against an indiscriminate attack, resulting in the recovery of the bodies of two female Naxalites and the seizure of an AK-47, a pistol, ammunition, Naxal literature, and personal belongings. The anti-Naxal operation remains ongoing, according to police sources.
