In a significant development, senior advocate Nirmal K Kotwal has stepped down from the legal proceedings defending AAP MLA Mehraj Malik, detained under the Public Safety Act (PSA) in Jammu and Kashmir. Kotwal's decision comes in response to Malik's allegedly controversial social media comments.
The detention of Mehraj Malik, head of Jammu and Kashmir unit of AAP, on September 8 in Doda has led to tumultuous protests. Authorities swiftly imposed internet restrictions following Malik's arrest for alleged disruption of public order, intensifying the situation in the district.
Kotwal, citing professional ethics and national interest, opted out of the case. He highlighted videos where Malik reportedly undermined the sovereignty of India, which had not been disclosed to him initially. In response, AAP announced a dedicated legal team to contest Malik's detention.
