Deepfake Scandal: Misleading Video Spurs Investigation in Ladakh
An FIR has been filed in Leh to trace the creators of a deepfake video falsely attributing statements to Ladakh DGP S D Singh Jamwal. The video, misleadingly suggesting climate activist Sonam Wangchuk’s arrest on orders from the defense minister, has sparked regional tensions and attracted police scrutiny.

On Thursday, authorities in Leh filed a First Information Report (FIR) aiming to trace and apprehend those responsible for a deepfake video misleadingly depicting Ladakh Director General of Police (DGP) S D Singh Jamwal.
The controversial video, which has been circulating widely on social media, falsely suggests that climate activist Sonam Wangchuk was arrested following directives from the defense minister. The Press Information Bureau (PIB) confirmed the video's status as a deepfake.
Police in Leh warn that such manipulated digital content can threaten regional peace. Law enforcement has urged the public to verify media content before spreading it and to report any false information to the Cyber Cell immediately. Investigations are ongoing.
