Two undertrial prisoners made a daring escape from the high-security Choudwar circle jail in Odisha's Cuttack district by scaling the boundary wall, as authorities reported on Friday.
The escapees, identified as Raja Sahani and Chandrakant Kumar from Bihar, were arrested earlier this year in connection with a robbery and double murder in Jajpur district. The breakout occurred during Dussehra celebrations on Thursday night, prompting a visit from Director General (Prisons and Correctional Services) Susanta Kumar Nath to evaluate the situation.
Nath reported that negligence charges have resulted in the suspension of a chief warder and a warder, and an investigation is being conducted into whether the prisoners received help from jail staff or outsiders. Evidence revealed that the prisoners used a cut iron rod and a blanket as a rope to execute their escape. Local police have joined prison authorities in an intensive search for the fugitives.
