In a significant legal development, the Supreme Court has decided to address a plea by TVK lawmaker R Seenivasa Sethupathi. This follows a Madras High Court ruling that presently prevents him from taking part in crucial voting procedures within the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.
C Joseph Vijay, who was sworn in as Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister on May 10, faces pressure as this legal contest threatens his coalition's legislative strength. Currently, the ruling TVK-led alliance holds a vulnerable 120-seat control in the 234-member assembly, jeopardized further by Sethupathi's exclusion.
The electoral dispute centers on claims from DMK's K R Periakaruppan, challenging alleged counting discrepancies and rejected ballots in the No.185 Tiruppattur constituency. With the Supreme Court's intervention, the state braces for possible shifts in its political landscape.
