Landless Squatters Rally in Nepal Against Government Eviction Drive

A mass rally took place in Lumbini province, southern Nepal, where thousands of landless squatters protested against the government's eviction drive. The initiative, led by Prime Minister Balendra Shah's government since April, aims to promote beautification and environmental protection, but has been criticized for displacing millions across Nepal, including in Kathmandu.

The protest on Sunday was organized by the Landless People and Un-managed Squatters Struggle Committee, Rupandehi, and saw participation from 25,000 individuals hailing from 22 districts. The Struggle Committee's convener, Khagendra Sangraula, stated that over one million families have been impacted, with no alternatives provided. 'People have suffered because of the government's move,' he said.

Political backing came from twelve parties, including the Nepali Congress and CPN-UML. Meanwhile, Nepal's Supreme Court has intervened, ordering the government to follow legal procedures for eviction and highlighting the potential humanitarian crisis without proper safeguards. The court emphasized the significant risks to constitutional rights such as housing and education.
