West Bengal Launches Major Probes into Past Corruption and Women's Rights Abuses
The West Bengal cabinet approved the creation of two panels under former Calcutta High Court judges to investigate institutional corruption and offenses against women and girl children during the previous TMC regime. West Bengal's cabinet has given the green light to form two investigative panels to delve into allegations of corruption and violence against women under the previous TMC government. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced the creation of these panels, to be led by former Calcutta High Court judges.
Presiding over the investigation into financial discrepancies and 'cut money' practices is retired Justice Biswajit Basu, with senior IPS officer Jayaraman taking on the role of member-secretary. This panel is tasked with uncovering any alleged financial misconduct.
The second panel, dedicated to examining hostile acts against women and girls, will be led by retired Judge Samapti Chatterjee. Senior IPS officer Damayanti Sen has been named the member-secretary for this team. Both panels are expected to commence their operations on June 1.
