The government of Meghalaya announced a new initiative offering significant reductions on penalties related to overdue motor vehicle taxes. The plan, aimed at alleviating the financial strain on local transporters, includes a 90% exemption on penalties for lapsed fitness certificates and an 80% reduction for other overdue vehicle taxes.

The initiative, approved by the Meghalaya Cabinet, will run until the end of August 2026. Chief Minister Conrad Sangma expressed hope that this measure would help local vehicle owners normalize their operations and avoid future debt. The Cabinet also approved regulations for official vehicle name boards to regulate government vehicle use.

Additionally, amendments to the Meghalaya Forest Authority Act were passed to improve the management and conservation of forests by enhancing coordination between various governmental bodies. These changes are expected to streamline operations and ensure effective forest governance.
