Investigation Launched into Suspected Methanol Poisoning in Pune
An investigation has commenced in Pune following the deaths of eight individuals, suspected to be linked to methanol-laced liquor. A bootlegger has been detained in connection with supplying illicit liquor. The deaths occurred in the Phugewadi area and Hadapsar, triggering a probe by the excise department.

An inquiry has begun in response to eight deaths in Pune within 24 hours, potentially linked to methanol-adulterated liquor, officials reported. The incidents were recorded in the Phugewadi locality of Pimpri Chinchwad and Hadapsar, prompting a swift regulatory reaction.
The excise department has detained a suspect, a bootlegger allegedly distributing the illicit alcohol, in these areas. Five individuals from Phugewadi succumbed on Thursday, though initial assessments did not connect all deaths to alcohol. Law enforcement is now examining each case cautiously. Additionally, Hadapsar authorities reported three fatalities, where the victims experienced severe abdominal pain before their deaths. The investigation aims to determine if toxic liquor played a role.
The state excise department has taken decisive action, apprehending Yogesh Wankhede, the alleged supplier, for questioning and further proceedings by Pimpri Chinchwad police.
