Russia-Led Bloc Warns Armenia Over EU Membership Ambitions

The Eurasian Economic Union, composed of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan, has warned Armenia that its push towards joining the European Union could result in the suspension of its membership. This development highlights growing tensions between Armenia's Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and the Kremlin.

During a summit in Astana, the leaders expressed concern over the economic risks Armenia's EU aspirations pose. They have instructed officials to assess the impacts of potential suspension by December. This warning to Armenia also included a suggestion for a referendum, asking citizens to decide between closer EU ties or remaining within the Eurasian Economic Union.

With Armenia's parliamentary elections on the horizon, Pashinyan remains defiant, rejecting the referendum and arguing for balanced relations with both the Eurasian bloc and the EU. However, Moscow's pressure has intensified, with economic threats, such as cutting cheap gas supplies and halting imports of Armenian goods, looming over the upcoming election.
